Pre-planing of delivery 41 ton container gantry crane

When the transported crane equipment is heavy and large, we need to make a pre-designed transportation plan, according to the transportation regulations of the destination country and the transportation method that can be used, so as to facilitate the follow-up procedures to obtain a more efficient and convenient transportation plan at a lower transportation cost. If you choose a transportation plan after the production of large-scale machinery is completed, you will be very passive. How to make a pre-transportation plan? Simply , the following issues need to be considered:

Which country will the equipment will be delivered? What types of transportation are available?

If the load or goods  is relatively large in volume  and heavy in weight, which type of transportation should I choose?

  • Sea transportation - bulk carrier, container, or bulk + container?
  • Land transport - Truck delivery & Rail transportation

How the transport method influence the subsequent equipment production?

If the container shipping is adopted, the long beam or our-triggers will be cut to fit in.

If the bulk carrier or truck is selected, without the limitation of container size, the huge beam or supporting legs of the gantry crane equipment does not need cutting during the production process.

Transportation charges

Freight charges for large equipment shipments are difficult to get an accurate price on until the equipment is produced. The reasons are as follows

  • Because there are possibility of  errors in the estimated shipping costs only based on the drawings.
  • The second is that the price of shipping is fluctuated with the time and are not fixed over time.

Therefore, the shipping cost given by the manufacturer is generally an approximate value. For the above reasons, in a purchase contract for a crane, you will see the following:

  • Freight, which is an approximate range, not an approximate quantity.
  • For equipment with a relatively long production cycle, such as large-scale 30 ton, 50 ton & 100 ton overhead crane and gantry crane, usually the freight quoted in the contract or quotation clauses will be specifically pointed out as following:

“ it is based on the market price at the time of signing the contract, but if there is more than 5% of the freight at the time of delivery. Or 10% fluctuates up and down, and the buyer or seller needs to make up and refund the freight, etc.“

As for shipping, it is one of the most used transportation during international trade. With transparent transportation price and specific goods or product dimensions, the cost will not be much different from different shipping company of same level.

However,  truck transportation requires a lot of experience and strength of the freight forwarder company. Take one of our 41-ton gantry cranes as an example. Because the destination country is in Uzbekistan, the truck transportation is selected.

Difficulty: large volume & heavy

Because the volume of the 40 ton gantry crane is relatively large and there are many parts and components products, it is difficult to calculated the numbers of the trucks required for transportation.

Large variation:  9 trucks, 10 trucks or 16 trucks?

The number of trucks needed vary largely from different transportation company.

we compared the quotations of more than a dozen freight forwarders in the process of freight inquiry. Even though the same dimensions of the 40 ton gantry cranes are provided to the different transportation company,  the number of vehicles required for the transportation of gantry crane by a dozen trucking companies is vastly different. The numbers of trucks needed for delivery the 40 gantry cranes vary largely from 9 to 16 vehicles.

What’s more,  the number of vehicles we finally used is 8 for inland transportation and 12 for foreign transportation.

Why are there so many differences?

Automobile transportation is generally divided into domestic transportation section and foreign transportation section.

In China, the length of the goods that can be transported by the transport vehicle is 1) 13.5m long 2) 17.5m long, and the maximum weight does not exceed 30 tons. Most of the domestic transportation sections will be a little overweight, and there will be a gap in the number of vehicles based on the customary experience of different freight forwarders for loading.

The cars in the foreign section are basically about 13.5m and cannot be overweight, basically about 15 tons. Because the road conditions of foreign road sections are changeable and complicated, the narrow mountain roads must be considered, which is generally the case for Central Asia Motor Transport.

The level of freight forwarding business is different. Some freight forwarders say they have traveled or often travel by car to Central Asia. Maybe they only travel by one car at a time. The cargo is relatively small and it is easier to load, but when they encounter large cargo, they have little experience for the first time.

For this 41-ton container gantry crane, the plan we chose is that we are responsible for the transportation section from the factory to the border, and the section from the customs gate to the customer is handed over to the freight forwarder, and the freight forwarder is required to report the unit price of each vehicle. This kind of plan It's good for trucks.

Loading and transportation

It also needs to be reasonably organized for loading and shipment. Because of reasonable space utilization and placement, it can save the freight cost of one truck for the customer under the premise of ensuring the safety of the goods. Or take this 41 ton gantry crane as an example. At the beginning, we expected about 10 domestic vehicles, and finally used 8 vehicles. How do we help our customers  to save shipping expenditure or money?

  • For some scattered accessories, try to load them into wooden boxes, which can be stacked and screwed together, which will save more space,
  • The main beams of gantry crane are partially stacked, and  the some bolts, cables, and other smaller parts can be packed into wooden cases, which can be loaded into the inner side of the box structure of gantry beam , to make reasonable use of the space used.

When the goods arrive at the location designated by the freight forwarder, unload all the goods and transfer them to the truck at the station. They need to go to customs. After the customs declaration is released, they need to queue up and transfer to the foreign car, and then the foreign car will drive directly to the customer destination.

This time,as for the 41 ton gantry crane transportation,  we chose the relatively small border crossing Ilk, because the freight here will be cheaper, but the defect is that the customs clearance is too slow. Objectively speaking, the replacement equipment here is relatively old and the work efficiency is relatively low. In addition, Ilk has relatively few transport vehicles and equipment, so we may apply for about 3 trucks at a time. It will be much faster if you go through such large ports as Horgos, but the freight will be high.

Customs clearance

On custom clearance, it is important to get the accompanying document needed.

When the gantry crane factory leaves the factory, the crane manufacturer will provide a list of the load dimensions and weight, but when it is transferred  the customs station of the destination country, where a new list of loads dimensions and weight will be proved. Generally, the two lists will not have much difference, and it will be used as a customs declaration and the data basis of the documents.

Documents needed for custom clearance

  • First we need to have a general Packing list and a commercial invoice,
  • The second is to make a packing list as a document with the car according to the weight scale of each car they gave after the replacement, and there is no need to do a commercial invoice.
  • Generally, what customers want is PL, CI, insurance policy, and factory quality report or a quality assurance commitment.
