True vertical lift, in essence, is the ability of a hoist to lift the hook straight up and down, picking up or lowering a load in a precise position with no hook drift. It occurs when a hoist (lower block) moves in a true vertical route between the lower limit of travel, which occurs when the rope(s) anchored at each end of the drum wind from the drum's center outward (inward when lowering the hook), allowing the hook and load to be centered below the drum's middle.
