A permanent magnet is one of the most commonly used below-the-hook devices for steel or iron handling, which allows metal handlers to rapidly and easily manage steel plate, pipes, and rods without the use of slings, chains, or blocking. They don't require electric energy to function, and they're much safer to use because they're not susceptible to power spikes or outages.

Working principles of permanent crane magnets

Permanent crane magnets are made up of magnet materials and steel elements that form a path for the magnetic flux to travel from the magnet materials to the ferromagnetic weight to be hoisted.

Permanent crane magnets are made of high-quality Neodymium magnets and mild steel, resulting in great magnetic power and small size.

There are two magnetic sources in the permanent magnet: one in the main body and one in the rotor. When the two magnetic sources are pointing in the same magnetic direction, the lifting magnet projects magnetic flux beneath its poles to a ferromagnetic load. When the two magnetic sources are pointing in opposing directions, they absorb each other's energy and no magnetic flux can escape from the lifting magnet. Meanwhile, the lifting magnet is uninterested in the burden.

By moving the lifting magnet's handle, you can change the magnetic direction of the magnetic source in the rotor, attracting and releasing the load.

Pros & cons of permanent magnets

Permanent crane magnets have the following advantages:

  • Permanent crane magnets are powered by magnet materials and do not require an additional power supply. As a result, they can be used anywhere.
  • Permanent crane magnets are made only of magnet materials and steel elements; they are long-lasting and require little maintenance.
  • Permanent crane magnets can be operated manually. Permanent crane magnets are relatively simple to use.
  • Permanent crane magnets have the lowest cost of any type of lifting magnet.

However, permanent crane magnets have several drawbacks:

  • When compared to electro lifting magnets, the magnetic field from the poles of permanent crane magnets is shallow. As a result, as the air space between the magnet and the load to be lifted rises, the lifting capacity of permanent crane magnets falls dramatically. The air gap is created by any dust, debris, paint, or rust.
  • The load thickness is limited by two factors. The first is that if the load thickness is less than this constraint, the actual lifting capacity will be less than the stated capacity. The second restriction pertains to rotating the handle. If the load thickness is less than this limit, you cannot turn the handle.
  • The higher the lifting capacity of permanent crane magnets, the more difficult it is to turn the handle from OFF to ON. Permanent crane magnets should have a maximum capacity of 2,000 kg (4,400 lbs), over which it is difficult to turn the handle from OFF to ON. (A few manufacturers provide permanent crane magnets with lifting capacities above 2,000 kg. However, turning the handles on these large lifting magnets is difficult.)
  • Permanent crane magnets are handled by hand and cannot be controlled remotely. They are not employed in atomization crane systems.
