Jib Crane Mounting Types: Floor, Wall, Ceiling or Foundationless?
Jib cranes comes in various crane designs such as, freestanding jib crane, wall mounted jib crane, wall travelling jib crane, and portable jib cranes, etc. And as for the mounting types of jib cranes vary with the designs,which mainly comes in the following types:
- Floor-mounted type jib
- Wall mounted type (fixed) jib
- Wall mounted type (travelling) jib
- Foundationless / Portable jib crane / Castor mounted jib crane
- Ceiling mounted Types Jib
As for the different mounting types of jib cranes, the main features of different jib mounting types will be presented for your reference.
Floor Mounted Type Jib Crane
This is the most popular type of Jib crane. A self-supporting jib crane with a vertical mast mounted on a concrete foundation is known as a floor mounted jib crane. These types of cranes are generally used to share the load of main cranes ( such as the overhead travelling cranes). The floor moutned jib crane is built in the manner described above. All of these cranes can rotate 360 degrees and are operated manually.
Foundation design of floor mounted / base mounted jib crane
Floor mount jib cranes and free standing jib cranes are other names for base mount jib cranes. These are typically installed on a concrete footing, removing the load from the building columns. These self-supporting jib cranes are ideal for applications that do not require large capacities or spans and are not near building columns. These can also be installed in a sleeve installed on top of the floor or recessed into the floor. Capacities of up to 15 Tons are available, as are spans of up to 50' and depths of up to 40' to the underside of the boom. The rotational axis is 360 degrees.
The free standing jib crane is designed to stand on its own with a floor-mounted foundation and is available in three varieties: Bolt-type base plate mounted foundation, insert mount foundation, or sleeve insert mounted foundation
- Floor Base Plate Mounted Jib Crane The jib crane column assembly is bolted to a pre-poured concrete foundation with embedded anchor bolts in this type of mounting.
- Foundation Mounted Jib Crane This method of mounting bolts the jib crane column to a pre-poured concrete footer. Once the jib crane column is plumb and secured to the footer a second concrete pour finishes the jib crane foundation and embeds the jib crane column in the foundation. The remainder of the jib is the same as the base plate mount jib crane.
- Sleeve Mounted Jib Crane The Foundation Mount is similar to a sleeve mounted jib crane. A steel sleeve is anchored to the concrete footer and embedded in the concrete foundation in place of the jib crane column. The jib crane column is then inserted into the sleeve, plumbed, and secured with a pair of split collars welded to the column and the embedded sleeve.
Consider the cost of the concrete foundation when buying a jib crane
A reinforced, poured concrete foundation is an essential component of a base-mounted jib crane. The size of this foundation is included in the jib quote, and anchor bolts with templates for setting these bolts in concrete can be included with the jib crane. The masonry work, which includes saw cutting the concrete and excavating to the proper depth, is not included in the price. The jib crane supplier or a separate contractor can perform this work.
Pillar jib cranes / column mounted jib crane
When there isn't a suitable building column nearby, mast jib or pillar jib cranes come in handy. The jib's mast connects to the floor and the overhead support steel. As a result, they apply forces to the building, but those forces often necessitate less reinforcement steel than a tie-rod or cantilever jib crane. Standard sizes range from 5 Tons to 20' span and 20' to the underside of the boom. Larger-scale custom projects are possible. The rotational axis is 360 degrees.
With its advantageous pillar jib crane design and floor mounted crane foundation, the free standing jib crane is able to offer larger capacity, longer cantilever length, and greater rotation range when compared to wall mounted jib crane, making it an excellent choice for various workstation applications with customized designs.
Wall mounted type (fixed) - Wall mounted jib crane
Instead of a vertical shaft, this crane is mounted horizontally on the wall using an column bracket. The hoist mechanism is similar to that of a floor-mounted hoist, but it lacks a vertical boom. The column bracket has a maximum rotation of 200 degrees but covers the area near the bracket mounting without obstructing the view from the floor.
Where strength allows, wall mount jib cranes can be mounted at any height on a vertical wall or building columns. They are ideal for areas with limited floor space and can easily swing out of the way of overhead cranes. A wall traveling jib crane could also be installed to maximize hook coverage area when compared to a traditional wall mounted jib crane. Standard sizes range from 5 Tons to 30' span. The rotational axis is 180 degrees.
Because wall mounted jib cranes are among the simplest to install, they are the most cost-effective overhead crane solution. The installation of a bracket wall mounted jib crane is quick and easy, and it can be relocated if necessary. The wall jib crane is attached to an existing wall or steel column in the workshop using wall brackets and fastening devices. There are several types of mounting systems available for your consideration:
- Wall mounted type- 1) Mounted on a reinforced wall- The bracket jib crane can be mounted directly on a wall that is strong enough to support the wall jib crane. The wall jib crane is attached to the wall with threaded rods that pass through the wall and are bolted to the wall with counter plates and nuts. 2) Mounted on the wall with embedded board and anchor bolts - After adjusting, the wall bracket crane can be bolted to the wall.
- Concrete column mounted type - The wall bracket jib crane can be mounted on a square or rectangular reinforced concrete column that can accommodate anchor bolts and a wall bracket while also supporting the jib crane.
- Steel structure column mounted type - 1) The wall jib crane is mounted on a steel construction column that has been strengthened to provide appropriate strength and contact surface to support it. All of the rids and connecting bolts used are extremely strong. 2) Bolts link the wall jib crane to the steel construction column, which is welded with steel plate with holes.

Factor to consider of wall mounted jib crane / Column mounted jib crane
It's critical for column-mounted jib cranes, both tie rod and full cantilever, to have a strong enough building column to support the load. Deflection will occur if the column is excessively light, which might lead to catastrophic failure. Because the column will support both the jib crane and the loading from the building, a structural engineer should be engaged.
Wall mounted type travelling type- Wall travelling jib crane
This kind's structure is similar to that of the fixed type, with the exception that the crane can cover the lengthwise region near the building columns without causing hindrance at floor level. The crane's columns are custom-made, and instead of spinning, the crane moves along a runway track suspended between building columns.
Foundationless & Portable jib cranes
Industrial slab-mounted systems that are fastened to reinforced concrete are known as foundationless jib cranes. They work in the same way as a base mount jib, except they don't require a particular foundation. This crane may be positioned practically anywhere in your plant and transferred easily if necessary.
Portable jib cranes are similar to base mounted jib cranes, however they are permanently attached to a hefty steel base. This design avoids the requirement for concrete footing and may be simply moved by a forklift for a variety of applications.
Ceiling mount jib crane
When it comes to increasing production space below the jib, ceiling mount jib cranes are a wonderful choice. They give a clear work area with no obstructions on the floor, as well as increased headroom and clearance in cramped workstations. Typically, these cranes are coupled to a carrier that runs on a bridge or monorail system. They're also great for an articulating jib crane because they can support almost any form of manipulator, balancer, or hoist. There are 360 degrees of rotation.
