With a top-running crane design, it is easier to construct long bridge spans, and in addition, the hook height—the distance between the floor and the hook—is higher, providing the user with significantly more headroom for lifts. Because additional supporting structures are required, this design is suitable to a substantially larger capacity for heavy lifts.
A top running bridge crane has a fixed rail or track system installed on the top of each runway beam, allowing the end trucks to carry the bridge and hoist along the top of the runway system. Top running cranes can be set up as either a single girder bridge or a double girder bridge. While a double girder bridge commonly has a top running trolley and hoist, a single girder bridge uses an under-hung trolley and hoist.
Top running bridge cranes can be constructed to handle weights of any size because they have no limiting capacity. Top running cranes can be constructed with capacities ranging from less than 1/4 ton to more than 100 tons. These bridge cranes are perfect for moving very heavy loads because they are supported by the runway or building structure.
Top running cranes, which travel on rails atop the runway beam, may lift buildings with less headroom higher. Because the hoist and trolley run on top of the two bridges or girders, adding an additional hook height, a top running double girder bridge design enables the highest lifting height.
Top running bridge cranes can be built to higher capacities and can accommodate broader spans, hence they are often larger than under running cranes. There is no suspended load factor because the crane is supported by rails that rest on top of the runway beams, making installation and future maintenance simpler and faster than with an under-hung crane.
Under-hung bridge cranes, which are frequently attached to the building structure itself, don't need column support systems if the building structure can support the overhead crane. This underhung crane design makes it possible to cover a larger area with fewer ceiling mounted support columns. Those columns do not hinder the work area beneath the bridge crane, which is beneficial in facilities with limited floor space or complex procedures. In exchange for this, hook height is lost. Your lifting requirements and the structure itself will ultimately decide the crane configuration that you need.
An under-running crane, also known as a "under-hung" crane, moves the bridge up and down the runway using wheels supported by the bottom flange of the runway beam. Under-hung cranes are typically designed with a single girder for lighter service and lower-capacity applications. They can also be built with two girders for increased capacity or hook height where needed.
An under running single girder crane will use an under running hoist and trolley that moves across the bridge beam's bottom flange. A double girder under running crane can run its hoist and trolley along the bridge beams' top or bottom.
When supported by roof or ceiling structures, under-hung cranes also provide excellent side approach and maximize utilization of the building's width and height. They are ideal for facilities that do not have enough vertical clearance to install a top-running overhead bridge crane system.
