Types of Overhead Cranes & Gangtry Cranes for
Industrial Uses & Different Loads Handling

Moving bulky, heavy, and cumbersome loads or materials down the aisles and floor of a manufacturing workshop or factory can be dangerous and time consuming. With better utilization of the overhead space of a factory , the installation of an overhead travelling crane system, material handling in those applications can be performed more efficiently, cost effectively, and safer. Loads or objects can be easily hoisted, lowered, and moved through the unused space, saving time and energy.

The movement of the overhead crane is controlled by specially trained crane operators using a variety of control devices. When considering movement options, consider the available space as well as the feasibility of installing an overhead crane.

How are overhead crane used for?Overhead cranes are used in a variety of areas throughout a facility to support processing and handling:

  • Assembly:Moving products through production processes
  • Transportation: Deliver finished products onto open trailers or railcars
  • Staging: Keeping work-in-process for future production processes
  • Storage: Transporting bulky items to and from storage facilities
  • Warehousing: Transporting large, heavy items to and from docks

Warehousing

When considering the need for an overhead crane, the first industry that comes to mind is warehousing, where supplies, equipment, and materials are constantly moved, positioned, and prepared. The timely movement of large items from storage to the shipping dock is a significant advantage of using an overhead crane in warehousing.

Assembly

Industries that assemble or install large equipment or machinery require a means for hoisting, lifting and moving incomplete assemblies from one worksite to another for completion. Forklifts, AGVs, and other forms of material handling equipment are not efficient or safe, which enables the untilization of an overhead crane system a necessity.By adopting the overhead crane system, it makes the moving assemblies simple and comes naturally during the production process.

Transportation

The same rules apply to warehousing as they do to transportation, where heavy bulky products must be loaded onto planes, trains, and trucks. Large materials can be easily positioned for transport by a proper overhead crane system. This is especially true for international shipping, where large containers and materials must be lowered into ship holds.

Equipment Repair

When the repair or maintenance of a punch press or other factory equipment or machinery is required, overhead cranes will be an help hand in facilitating for the equipment repairing and maintaining by gradually moving and positioning pieces or parts for easy access. Gantry cranes and overhead bridge cranes can remove heavy equipment or machinery parts and components from their permanent location to a repair shop and then return them back with high precision. Overhead travelling cranes make it easier to lift machines up and turn over other equipment to be placed at a repair station.

Running a warehouse or large industrial business requires not only high-quality material handling tools, but also the right hoisting and transporting tools to keep your processes running smoothly. You will be able to maximize productivity, quickly transport loads and objects around your workshops or other facility, and enjoy a variety of other benefits with an electric overhead travelling crane, including:

Increased Safety & Efficiency

Forklifts pose the risk of inaccurate stacking, dropping goods, and accidents (due to crashing). Because overhead eot cranes move objects or loads through the facility's overhead space, they are free of these hazards and can move heavy and bulky loads faster than forklifts.

Improved Load Control with High Precision

Overhead cranes are frequently equipped with precision controls that allow them to position objects precisely and easily. This enables the operator to precisely position the load while minimizing human error.

Save floor space and Avoid Floor Obstructions

Because overhead cranes are installed as high as the ceiling of your facility, they avoid almost everything on your workshop floor. As a result, the travelling cranes systems can be installed at almost anywhere you want. You will also be able to transport loads safely above any obstacles, and at same time reducing product damage with proper crane attachments.

Improved Ergonomics and Reduce Labor Cost

Because overhead cranes do the heavy lifting for you, they relieve strain on your operators, lowering the risk of injury and worker fatigue. And with intelligent crane operation, it will reduce the fatigue of repeative work and improve efficiency and safety and will help you reduce the labor force.

Easy Lifting of Loads & Simple Operation

As previously stated, the eot cranes have a high lifting capacity. You can rely on your brdige crane to lift and transport your loads to other parts of your facility once they are installed. However, each overhead crane has a maximum lift capacity that must not be exceeded in order to avoid accidents or failure.

Types of Overhead Cranes & Their Typical Uses
Bridge Crane, Gantry Crane, Jib Cranes & KBK Cranes

Overhead bridge cranes

An overhead crane (also known as an bridge crane, eot crane, or overhead traveling crane) is a material handling equipment that lifts, lowers, and transfers a load horizontally and vertically with a hoisting systems, which are widely adopted to handle exceptionally heavy or bulky loads at a facility. For load movement, overhead cranes is able to handle loads with higher lifting capacity, and crane travel is controlled by an operator, either manually or by a wired pendant station or wireless controls that guide the crane's electric travel. Typical uses and application of overhead cranes include multi-directional movement of loads to support manufacturing, storage, loading or unloading operations inside a facility, outside in a yard, or at a railway or shipping port.

What is an Overhead Crane?

An overhead crane is a piece of machinery or equipment that allows you to precisely lift and move loads from one area to another. Each overhead crane is precisely designed and engineered for a unique purpose or application to suit a business' material handling demands, therefore there is no "one size fits all" approach to defining an overhead crane.

Different components can be used or redesigned to improve the capacity and performance of overhead cranes, which can be designed and manufactured in a variety of configurations.

We manufacture a variety of overhead bridge crane configurations, including (but not limited to) a Double girder crane and a Single girder crane that can be deployed as a Top Running or Under Running solution. If a free-standing bridge crane is more appropriate for your use, we may recommend or customize one.

Single girder overhead cranes

Single girder cane - A single girder crane can be grouped into Top running crane with the beam girder seated on the top of end carriages, and underhung crane with the bridge girder attached to the end carriage.

For many workshops and industrial applications, single girder overhead cranes are the most cost-effective overhead bridge crane solution. Single girder overhead cranes use less steel material, have a more compact crane structure, and weigh less than double girder overhead cranes, resulting in significant cost savings in steel material purchasing, transportation, and crane installation.

Double girder overhead crane uses

Double girder crane- The two bridge beams are usually supported on the top of the runway end trucks, whith a top running trolley hoist as the hoisting mechanisms. The double girder overhead cranes are usually known as a top running crane, which travel along on the top of the two bridge beams to improve headroom under the crane.

Double-girder overhead travelling cranes with higher lifting capacities and longer spans are widely recommended for heavy-duty material handling. As a result, the crane parts and components of a double girder travelling overhead crane system, such as the hoist trolley and open winch trolley, are more complicated in design, making double girder overhead cranes more expensive than single girder overhead cranes.

For different industrial sectors and different loads handling, there are types of double girder overheard cranes and below-the-hook devices available to meet your needs and applications.

Gantry Crane

A gantry crane is an overhead crane with freestanding legs that move along a track or rail system or on wheels. When an overhead runway system are not available, gantry cranes are frequently used. They are typically used outdoors or in conjunction with an existing overhead bridge crane system. A gantry crane, unlike a bridge crane, does not require permanent runway beams and support columns because it is not attached to the building's support structure. When compared to a bridge crane of comparable specifications, this can result in significant material cost savings and be a more cost-effective option.

Single girder gantry crane

Single girder Single girder gantry crane is a light duty single girder gantry crane which is generally used when the loads Q≤50 ton and the span S≤35m. Single girder gantry cranes have a very wide application, which can be adopted when overhead crane or bridge crane is not practical.

The single girder gantry cranes can be used indoors or outdoors, for material handling in various industrial applications such as in steel stock yards, pre-cast segment yards, construction sites , open-air storage yard, freight yards, docks, power plants, ports and railway stations and other places for cargo handling and installation operations.

  • Box girder crane – The main girder of the overhead crane is fabricated by a four-sided steel box structure. This enhances the bridge crane's load capability and allows for longer bridge spans.
  • Truss girder crane – A crane designed with structurally reinforced steel bars, the truss bridge girders is designed for wind resistance application.

Slewing jib cranes

Jib cranes are typically used to handle lighter loads and have shorter duty cycles than bridge and gantry cranes. A floor-mounted jib crane can work with multiple jibs at separate workstations, assisting the overhead crane in lifting and handling loads and improving overall production line efficiency. The hook's coverage is limited to the length of the boom (typically a maximum of 20 ft.). The hook is attached to a boom, which rotates around a fixed point.

Monorails Cranes & Workstation Crane

Workstation cranes are essential in a wide range of industries, including aerospace, farming, manufacturing, and others. By allowing the lifting and moving of heavy loads within the workspace, they make it easier and safer for workers to position materials and equipment where they need them to perform their tasks. As a result, they help to reduce the worker injury, and low product damage, and to increase workstation productivity.

  • I-beam crane - Utilizes standard I-beam as the main bridge girder and may also employ I-beams as the runway beams.
  • Monorail crane & monorail hoist system-Ceiling monorail & Free standing monorail- A cost-effective alternative to bridge crane, gantry crane & conveyor belt in workstations.
  • The workstation bridge crane system that can be used in a variety of work area sizes and shapes, as well as to combine multiple work areas. This type of workstation crane system can be easily adapted for more complex applications by adding extra rails and components, resulting in a total expanded system.
